Reducing Emissions from Pig Houses

Big Dutchman has developed the ideal solution to significantly reduce emissions and create optimal air conditions in pig houses.

The Porcus air scrubber is available in a biological and a chemical version, as well as in a wide range of module sizes. The biological Porcus scrubber removes up to 70 per cent of ammonia, 45 to 70 per cent of odour, and 60 per cent of particulate matter. With the chemical version, separation rates are 70 to 90 per cent for ammonia, 30 per cent for odour, and 35 per cent for particulate matter.

The air scrubber is built in a robust plastic housing and connected to the pig house via a pressure chamber. The air enters the front of the scrubber and moves upwards through the horizontal washing bed, where it is intensively rinsed from above using a sprinkler system. The large surface area ensures thorough cleaning of dust, ammonia and odour from the exhaust air.

The process water recirculates until it reaches a certain pollution level. Part of the water is then pumped to the waste water tank and clean water is added back into the process. All measuring processes, valves and controls are fully automated to make operation easier and achieve optimal performance. An important advantage of Porcus’ modular design is the technical room in which all technical components are mounted. The practical arrangement of the technology provides a good overview whilst also making maintenance easier.

The biological scrubber is a very good choice when the most important goal is reducing odour emissions, in addition to the separation of ammonia and dust. Naturally occurring bacteria grow on the filter material. In a nitrification process, these bacteria convert ammonia into ammonium nitrate. To maintain the ideal pH value, specific operating substances such as acids or alkalis must be added. When operating Porcus as a chemical air scrubber, the use of sulfuric acid is necessary. This lowers the pH value and then binds the nitrogen as ammonium sulphate. The amount of water required is much lower, but it must be stored separately.

Having completed several hundred projects using air scrubbing technology, Big Dutchman has a wealth of experience in planning and implementing sophisticated air cleaning systems.
